2012 Laughs at the Legion Comedy Night!

As we embrace the post-holiday season, and often face the winter blues, the Highland-White Lake Business Association and the American Legion Hall want to lift your spirits and put a smile on your face with “Laughs at the Legion”. These two organizations are partnering together to bring you the 1^st Annual “Laughs at the Legion” Comedy Night on Saturday, February 4^th beginning at 7pm. This public event is will be fun, while benefiting the HWLBA Scholarship Fund. The Highland-White Lake Business Association provides 2 local students with college scholarships based on academics, community involvement and essay entry.

Don’t miss out on this first-time experience with headliner Sal Demilio. Sal is a national headliner and performs regularly at such top clubs as Zanies, The Funny Bone, Hilarities, Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle, and The Laugh Factory. Sal has complimented such acts as Dave Coulier, Dave Attel, Kathleen Madigan, Nick Dipaolo, Lewis Blackand Bobby Collins.

Tickets for this public event are only $15 per person and a whole table can be reserved. Parties of 8 or more can reserve premier seating by pre-purchasing tickets. Tickets and table reservations are available at the HWLBA office, or may be purchased by credit card on our web site at www.HWLBA.com. Food and drinks are available for purchase during the event. The American Legion Hall is located at 510 West Commerce in Milford.

Holiday options abound in downtown Highland

With Michigan's economy slowly showing signs of recovery, business owners throughout the state are hoping a strong holiday shopping season propels them into prosperity for 2012.

More and more people are jumping on board with the "shop local" theme, trying to support local businesses instead of throwing their disposable income at faceless corporations and foreign entities.

There's a simple reason why people should consider shopping in the local community, according to Missy Dasevich, executive director the Highland Downtown Development Authority. "It's to keep your neighbors employed," she said.

The idea seems to have merit. Research indicates more than two-thirds of the money spent shopping at local, independent stores is reinvested in the local community. Whether those businesses are paying local taxes, employing friends and neighbors or donating to any number of school or civic fundraiser, local businesses help maintain a thriving community.

"It's so important to shop local, because the money that you spend stays local. If you really enjoy those local merchants - the corner gift store, markerts - you should make an effort to visit them, to keep them around," said Dashevich.

A popular email making the rounds in people's inbox reinforces the idea. The email encourages people to take a different route this gift-giving season by giving loved ones what they need while supporting the local gift shop, restaurant or professional business.

"As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply-produced goods - merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor," the email states. "This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift-giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is."

The chain email suggests purchasing gift certificates for loved ones.

The Huron Valley community has a wealth of locally-owned businesses that would love your support.

Perhaps your sister has a labrador retriever that likes to roll around in whatever stench it can find in the back field. Or maybe your daughter has a Pomeranian with a penchant for ribbons and feathers in its hair.

Then a gift certificate for a place like Silver Bone pet groomers in Highland may be the perfect present.

Or if you have a young grandchild in the family, and you want to help start him on his road to riches, consider opening a savings account some place like Kensington Valley Credit Union.

With haircuts, oil changes, restaurants or massages, there's no shortage of ideas if you go the gift certificate route.

But sometimes you want to see your loved ones rip the paper off the box and tear into the box to see what's inside. There's still plenty of stores within a few miles of your home to find what you're looking for.

Stores like Fragments on Milford Road have a little bit of everything for kids and adults alike. Fragments also features local artists, so you're supporting the local community even more when shopping. Or Caveman Consignments just down the street has just about anything you need for that man in your life.

Looking for something even more personal? Local crafters spin their own wool to create scarves, or forge their own jewelry, or mold their clay pots or build unique wooden boxes.

The Huron Valley Council for the Arts is an option for finding a one-of-a-kind gift. Their holiday market - all local artists - runs through December and can help ensure no one else will give Aunt Clara the same present as you.

Shopping locally isn't something to be restricted to the holidays. There's a number of benefits to keeping your spending dollars close to home.

In addition to keeping money in the community, independent businesses help keep the community unique. Where you eat, shop and have fun all helps make the Huron Valley home. These shops help create a distinct character, something that defines it as unique, instead of simply a feeling of being anywhere.

So when you head back out to pick up those last few presents, save some time and help build up the community by shopping local.

Red Box Food Drive Nov 15-Dec 15th

The mission of Highland-White Lake Business Association is…local business united with our community and the HWLBA is ready to help our local community during this holiday season with the annual Red Box Food Drive and going through December 15^th. The donated non-perishable food items will benefit 3 of the local non-profit food pantry’s; including the Goodfellows of Highland, Community Sharing and Open Door Outreach Center. Changes in HWLBA Administration

As we progress into the New Year, the Highland-White Business Association will undergo some transitions within the organization. To begin with, Tami Flowers will be leaving the HWLBA to seek full-time employment. Her position as the Administrator for the association has enabled us to grow and progress toward our mission…local business united for our community. Tami has been an asset and allowed our organization to adapt successfully with the advancements made in the social media channels, while keeping the members and the board well-informed of upcoming events, challenges and maintaining a steady budget.

While her position has been a difficult one to fill, the Board Members have decided to hire Kim Lucas to take over in Tami’s role as the Administrator for the HWLBA. Kim will be stepping down as the current President of the Highland-White Lake Business Association, and Dave Thurau will be assuming the position of HWLBA President for the remainder of the year.

The HWLBA staff and members have developed and implemented some comprehensive marketing and public relations plans covering our local area. We look forward to another successful year, and strive toward growth and local business united with our community.

Highland HeyDays will kick off on Saturday, September 10th with a square dance, chili cook-off, and a beer tent with live and DJ entertainment! Sunday, September 11th, let the street fair begin with the main focus on our family pets. There will be an animal magic show with Mark Rosenthal, Rock & Roll K-9's will perform animal agility shows choreographed to music. We will have a pet parade, pet photos, a family dog show and Veterinary Care Specialists will provide pet CPR and first aid demonstrations. The streets will be lined with vendors; such as, pet rescue groups, local businesses, and local products. There will be children's activities (face painting, pumpkin painting, bounce houses and more), so don't delay...reserve your space today! Highland HeyDays is quickly approaching. September 10th & 11th, we will celebrate our families, pets and our wonderful community. This event is sure to put a smile on your face, and warmth in your heart. On Saturday, September 10th, we will kick off with a Fire in the Hole Chili Cook-Off benefiting the local firefighters. Following the Chili Cook-Off, Highland Feed & Supply will host a Square Dance from 7pm-9pm. There will be food provided throughout the evening in effort to raise money for the Acairdi Foundation. Music will fill the air all night, as we will provide DJ entertainment from 9pm-midnight. The Highland-White Lake Business Association will host a beer tent for this event.

Sunday, September 11th, we begin the pet portion of this event. With exciting demonstrations from Rock & Roll K-9's, Mark Rosenthal Animal Magic, Pet CPR & Training Tips, Horse Vaulting and so much more! Children can enjoy the bounce houses, face and pumpkin painting, the petting zoo, etc. Come and check out this fun & exciting festival that is sure to mark your calendars for years to come!

The Highland-White Lake Business Association needs your help for our annual Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament being held at the Shark Club in Waterford. This fundraiser is organized by the HWLBA and the Sparks in the Park team. Funds are needed this year in order to make sure this enjoyable community event can continue to be free for area families to enjoy.

Please help us by volunteering during one 4 or 5 hour shift, and have some fun at the Shark Club. Below is the volunteer schedule. We need 2 volunteers per each shift, so we welcome you to bring your spouse, friend or anyone over 21 to help make this a success.

We have 16 dates scheduled this year. The first are coming up on February 10-13 and continue March 10-13, April 7-10, and May 13-16.

2010 HBA Comedy Night

The Highland-White Lake Business Association and Women In Business is hosting a Comedy Night at the White Lake Inn on Saturday, November 13th, beginning at 7pm.

To provide an update on the status of Highland's new sign ordinance, it was passed last night (November 4th) at the Township Board Special Meeting. It is expected tol go in effect November 18th. Here’s a link to the revised ordinance: http://www.highlandtwp.com/uploaded_pics/pdf-20101110115822.pdf

The Township Officials did make a few adjustments to what was originally proposed including eliminating the tighter limits on interior window signs (it will remain at 75% coverage allowed) and increasing the number of times per year that businesses will be allowed to have Special Event Temporary Signs from 3 to 6 times per year per property. Businesses will need to apply for a permit each time these are done and they cannot be placed within 15 feet of the driving portion of the road. (See pg 14-9 &10). They’re also allowing businesses to place a temporary sign just outside their door each day and bring it in at night (these were illegal in the old ordinance).

After much discussion about vehicles with advertising on them, they assured HBA Staff that this ordinance would not be used to harass businesses who have vehicles that are used regularly in the course of their business that are parked in their own parking lots. We wish they had put more specific wording into place about what exactly that means. If area businesses will help to keep HBA staff informed of how these rules are being enforced, we will continue to interact with the township staff and officials to pursue policies that are as business friendly as possible.

New Sign Ordinance Update

Highland Township is considering a revised ordinance which includes the sign rules for businesses. Some of the proposed changes for signs were:
- Some LED changeable copy will be permitted
- “Sandwich Board” type signs permitted near store entrance (must be taken in at night)
- Allowance for temporary signs (14 days, three times per year)
- Tighter limits on interior window signs (25% coverage)
- Six foot maximum height on freestanding signs (discourages new “pole” signs)

The board discussed the portion of the ordinance that relates to signs during a special session on October 27th and decided to make a few adjustments including eliminating the tighter limits on interior window signs (it will remain at 75% coverage allowed) and increasing the number of times per year that businesses will be allowed to have Special Event Temporary Signs from 3 times to 6 per property. It doesn't seem likely that there will be any further discussion on altering the sign rules. The board does plan to continue to discuss the other portions of the zoning ordinance at a special meeting this Thursday, November 4th at 5:30 at the Township Hall. At the end of the discussion, they may decide to hold a vote to accept the ordinance, which would be preceded by a opportunity for public comment.

We strongly encourage area businesses to review the proposed ordinance and voice your opinions to the township officials before this vote is held. There has been a moratorium on enforcement on the use of temporary signs for some time - which will end when the new ordinance is accepted. The new ordinance could take effect in as little as 7 days after it is accepted.

Throughout the year, the Highland-White Lake Business Association develops new strategies to raise money for the annual Sparks in the Park event, along with new ways to network your business. This year, we are determined to host a unique, family event, for the community to enjoy in addition to raising money for Sparks in the Park.

The Association will be hosting an event in conjunction with Veterinary Care Specialists at 205 Rowe Road in Milford this Saturday, October 30th from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Halloween Pet-A-PALooza is designed for your pets, and will be a great opportunity for you to gain more knowledge and information, have a photo taken of your pet (or with your pet) and take your pal out for some tricks and treats. With local animal establishments among the vendors at the event, your special friend is guaranteed to feel welcome.

Prizes will be given away in the photo contest, there will be raffles, and one lucky animal will receive a gift basket, and the chance to ride on, or walk beside the HBA float in the annual Hi-White Parade. Some of our local animal lovers will include; the Silver Bone, Pet Supplier, Adopt-A-Pet, Kathy’s Klips and more. Think about our animal friends, and how you can become more involved! Oakland Schools Southwest Campus The mission statement for Oakland Schools Technical Centers (OSTC) is to provide a learning system that provides informed career preparation decisions, skills and knowledge (academikc, technical & workplace) and preparation to compete. The final components of renovation were completed which allows students to necessary training for Health Science, Smart Home Technologies, Alternative Energy Technologies, GIS Technologies and Microsoft 2007 Transition. Some of the programs offered to the students are: Summer Health Academy which is a three week program for 25 students between their junio and senior years. In partnership with local hospitals the students obtain both theory and clinical on-site instruction. Health Opportunity Days allows over 500 students to participate in 17 health career areas at Highland Lakes OCC campus. There are also Beaumont Saturday Series for Emerging Technologies, Oakland County Global Trade Mission, GM Academy, Vehicle Design & Engineering Academy, CAD/drafting contests, Business Briefing Day just to name a few. Our evening networking event was held at Dave & Amy's restaurant in White Lake. For those of you new to the area, in the summer of 2007 after years of franchising, Dave & Amy created their new family friendly bar & grill. They offer a variety of great starters, and entrees like St. Louis style ribs, Cherry Chicken salad, Flat Iron steak, catch of the day seafood or Panko Cod. Is your mouth watering yet?? Well how about fried cheesecake ala mode with raspberry sauce or a Cookie sundae. They also offer ice-cold direct-draw draft beers, wine or cocktails. We have over thirty members and perspective members networking with great appetizers of potato slabs (potato skins with bacon and melted cheddar jack cheese served with sour cream, Mackinaw City Hot wings, and those wonderful battered onion rings. Highland Business Association's Coffee Hour will be hosted by Carpet Classics Floor Studio. Carpet Classics has been around sine it was founded by Marge Aretha in 1984, They changed their name from Carpet Classics to Carpet Classics Floor Studio because they wanted the public to know that they were so much more than just carpeting; how about tile, hardwood, laminates, linoleum, cork and so much more. As most independent entrepreneurs Marge Aretha founded her busines on the principals of personalized service and unbeatable selection. Which translates into wonderful quality, attention and caring at reasonable prices. I know that I like going into a store where they know my name and maybe even the last project I was working on at my home so that they can assist in moving me forward. As most of our local sommunity businesses this one too started as a family business and everyone from nieces and nephews to close friends were found working at this wonderful establishment.

Carpet Classics was originally located at the corner of M59 & Duck Lake Rd, in the Highland Corners center. In 1989, they moved to their current location at 144 South Milford Road, in the Highland Station district. They offer samples to take home and see how they look in your environment under your lights, they have their own installers, they give free estimates and most importantly they are local merchants who live and work in our community. Because they live and work in our community they have a give back to the community program where you can pick the charity.

So many times when we hear about a networking event we think this is about having a business card to hand out to everyone. We often hear the phrase “work the room” when you are at a networking event. I particularly have found it hard to “work the room” and felt that when I spend most of my time with one or two persons at a networking event I had not done my job of promoting my business. Then a sage business person told me, that is what networking was about. Building relationships which means spending time with a person to understand their business, their drive, why they are in this business, what their hobbies are, their favorite sports teams, well you get the idea. January 12th 2010, the Highland Business Association, White Lake Township Business Association and Women In Business have dedicated 7:00pm-9:00pm at Dave & Amy’s in White Lake to allow their members the opportunity to build business and personal relationships away from all the demands of business, and personal lives. It is tempting to say, forget this networking event, after having worked a full day and the quiet and relaxation of home is calling. When I look for a photographer I always have wondered why I like one portfolio over another, when going through Gracon's web site they talk about Greg being a Certified Professional Photographer having earned the Photographic Craftsman Degree from the Professional Photographers of America. Okay for me I had to know what all that meant. I was pretty impressed with the test specifications which include: CAMERA, LENSES AND ATTACHMENTS category which means he has to know both digital and film cameras, which is appropriate for the subject matter and final product; COMPOSITION AND DESIGN which covers the best color relationship to complement subject(s) to achieve the desired effects
(mood, power, size, strength, etc); then there were topics like DIGITAL POST PRODUCTION, EXPOSURE AND METERS, FILM, DIGITAL CAPTURE, OUTPUT and LIGHTING. After passing the test a portfolio of his work was submitted to a panel of judges made up of his peers for their approval. To maintain his certification, every 5 years he must participate in continuing education programs and submit his work for critical evaluation. This helps assure that certified photographers maintain their level of expertise and continue to develop new skills and techniques. On the Professional Photographers of American website they state "that there are less than 3% of all imaging professionals who have successfully completed and maintained a Certified Professional Photographer certification."
I'm impressed and the next time I want to capture that five generations picture, I'll rethink my ability to just grab my digital and do it.

Member Luncheon - Broadview Tree Farm

Highland Business Association's traditional December lunch at Broadview Tree Farm is on December 10th at Noon. Reminder dress warm, we will again be in the warming hut having hot cocoa and a casual lunch starting at noon. If you haven't gotten your tree for Christmas this is the time to do it! Again, as a previous local business I would remind you to shop locally because when you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms.

Now a little bit about our wonderful hosts for this event - straight from their website "Broadview Tree Farm www.broadviewtreefarm.com is located on 118 acres in Highland Township where wildlife abound. It is not uncommon to see deer, rabbits, pheasants, fox and occasionally coyotes running ahead of our tractors. Canadian honkers and sandhill cranes constantly cross our skyline. A little history about our luncheon site - Broadview Farm was farmsteaded by our ancestors in 1849. Cash crops and sheep were the primary endeavors until 1947 when Ott and Betty Brian planted their first Christmas trees. Through the years they covered many acres and eventually began selling them to neighbors and passersby. In 1972 their children and spouses joined in a joint Christmas tree operation, and Broadview Christmas Tree Farm became a reality. As our tree plantation grew, so did our need for help—family and friends came to our rescue and continue to do so. Each tree harvesting season they appear like helpful elves. Each weekend night everyone gathers in the kitchen to enjoy a potluck supper and talk over the day. Our farm operation involves year-round tasks, including planting seedlings, spraying for insects and weed control and pruning as well as harvesting during the holiday season. We would not be able to operate without our crew of local kids. Over the years we have watched them learn the value of hard work and take pride in their efforts, as well as have fun working together. Even after college graduation, many return to help out and share memories. The year we celebrated 50 years of choose and cut tree harvesting, we passed out a handmade Christmas tree ornament to each family as they came by our cashier window. When we gained sesquicentennial status (150 years same family line ownership), we gave out tree bags to celebrate. Over the years we have donated many Christmas trees to the community and participated in local fundraisers. We enjoy celebrating the holidays with a traditional real tree as the centerpiece and so do our families and neighbors and especially our customers, who return year after year to make more traditional holiday memories. At the present time six families live on this farm with a seventh one anticipated--the fifth through the eighth generations make the farm their home as do many pets, both dogs and cats. Broadview Christmas Tree Farm is truly a family operation."

The Highland Business Association is almost 200 members strong. Some of the events sponsored are TGIF Coffee Hour (second Friday of each month from 8:00am-9:00am) hosted by a local business, Luncheons (4th thursday starting at noon) hosted by a local business, 25,000 copies of the membership directories are distributed to every home and business in the Highland and White Lake Townships, listing on their website, discounted rate to participate in the Huron Valley Chamber of Commerce's Business Expo, Ladies Enrichment Day, monthly newsletters, advertising opportunites at a variety of events just to name a few.
The Highland Business Association coordinates many community service projects; such as, Red Box Food Drive, Movie Night at the Library, the Highland Christmas Tree Lighting and Sparks in the Park . The organization also awards college scholarships to outstanding area graduates.
All of these events truly support and promote your business and that may be reason enough to belong, but these activities also promote and support local communities and families.
